What you have to keep in mind is to avoid mastering for loudness first. Right now you have to focus on making the best master you can while understanding how to deal with the loudness of a mastered track and what's happening in the world in terms of mastering and loudness.

Try having at least a -14, -11 RMS on your mastered track ( or -16, -14 LUFS).

Avoid unwanted distortion.

If you reach a -12 RMS but your track still sound weak compared with other tracks - maybe the low end of your mix is eating the headroom - so you may want to work some more on your mix.
